I was fortunate enough to get a assignment abroad this summer. It allowed for my airfare to be paid for and my stay while I was on location so I decided to make it into a vacation. My boyfriend flew over at the end of my assignment in Ravello, Italy (on the Amalfi coast) and we spent a day there then continued on to Istanbul for 5 days and then to Prague where his parents are from and most of his extended family still resides. I bought a much sought after Fuji x100 for the trip and have to say it was the perfect accompaniment for all the travel. Small and light , it shot amazing photos comparable to film which I normally like to shoot for personal work. I found the black and white mode especially impressive. It has a fixed lens and that ended up being a bit wide for me at times but it is definitely a good addition to the collection. I was turned onto this artist by a kind soul at CCA, where I believe she once attended (could be wrong). She has left the states to live in Berlin and pursue her career as a photographer/fine artist also working in collage. I am very drawn to her collages. I used to play with this medium years ago and it has made me perhaps want to return to it….if only I had a workspace!!! Anyhoo, enjoy her site and her work here.

Sally Mann, one of the most influential photographers of our time. Its comforting to know that she is still working and pushing the boundaries with original photographic processes in this digital age. She has reverted to a process that opposes current proper photographic techniques. A process where its impossible to duplicate a image, exposure mistakes and oddities are welcome, and image sharpness is not an issue. View the attached video to get a glimpse of the new work.

NYC TRIP FEB 15-20

Gearing up to leave sunny San Francisco and head for the snowy east coast. While part of it is pleasure the majority of it is work related. I will be showing my book around town to reps and magazines. All the hard work over the past several years has finally coming to fruition. I now have the ability to show my work in a clean finished matter which is the book that I’ve feverishly worked so hard on. I’m elated to finally show it off and shop myself around town. Im also looking forward to the east coast sarcasm which I miss so incredibly living on the west coast. While NYC is no Philly when it comes to attitude, it definitely has its own form of bluntness and disregard which I love.

This couple (I think they are from SF too) did an outstanding job creating a photo-series together that is raw and visually stimulating. They won the illustrious 3rd ward exhibition which will no doubt help lauch their careers even more so and open doors at every turn.

Starting the year 2011.

First thing that started the year out with a bang was getting my finely crafted photo-books back from Edition One Books. They are a smaller press but were totally spot on with excellent customer service. I must’ve gone through at least 4 printers in 2010 and I couldn’t find anyone to do a small run of my photo book not only for a reasonable price but more importantly a decent print quality. The photos look great and exceeded my expectation. They worked with me one-on-one which is nearly impossible to find these days. I had some file issues and they were very patient with me. I would highly recommend them. The book ended up being a cloth bound hardcover with a foil stamp of my title and name on the front. It looks really top-notch and really me. It has a very hand-crafted feel to it which I wanted. It ties in well with my photos which tell a story of old Americana and lifestyle all shot with film. I added text to this version, it is minimal, abstract captions under each photo. I think it helps give it the individualistic quality I was looking for. I plan to show the book around NYC in February, have a few connections and plan to do the rest through gusto. I also got enough printed that I can send several out at one time to a very specific selected group where my work fits their target audience. On another note, I am working on doing a group show that is scheduled to travel across the US, to support breast cancer awareness. It was in LA and now it is traveling to SF, then onto NYC. Other exciting things to come in 2011 is becoming an aunt for the first time. March 2nd, is the due date and I look forward to that moment everyday.

Diane Arbus vs. Fur: an Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus

Last night I watched Fur: an Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006), a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downy Jr. The movie was enticing and provocative but accurate?-not in the slightest. Apparently according to most accounts of the famed photograher that I could find online, the majority of the movie was completely false. The whole movie is based around this love affair she has with her exotic neighbor which leads to her abandoning her family. The movie ends with saying that this character “Lionel” whom she has an affair with never existed, and all accounts elsewhere said the same thing. WHY would you make a movie about a ground-breaking photographer of the 20th century and have it be totally abstract from any factual knowledge pertaining to the artists life?! I understand that it was supposed to be an “imaginary portrait” but in the very least I expected it to be based on some truths. While I did find the movie to be fasinating, I left broken-hearted that I hadn’t really learned anything at all about this beautiful, mysterious photographer whom I have admired for years.
